Alternatives & Safety

A loan isn't always the answer, and not everyone offering one is genuine.

Sometimes the best loan is the one you don't take. These guides cover cheaper places to borrow, free help when money is tight, and how to make sure anyone offering you credit is who they say they are.

Before You Borrow, Ask Yourself

  1. Could the bill be spread instead?

Many energy suppliers, councils and other companies will agree a payment plan if you ask, with no interest at all.

  2. Is there free help I haven't used?

Government advances, council crisis funds and free debt advice could cover the gap or ease the pressure.

  3. Could a credit union lend to me?

Their rates are capped by law, and many lend to people that banks turn away. See our guide to credit unions.

  4. Am I sure the lender is real?

Check any firm on the FCA Register before you share your details, and learn the signs in our guide to spotting loan scams.
